MERP — Medical Expense Reimbursement Plan

A MERP is the answer for all you people who spend money on medical expenses but are never able to write them off on your personal tax return because they don’t equal more than 7.5% of your income.

The way a MERP works is your business reimburses you for all of your medical expenses. Then the business gets the write-off as an employee benefit expense.

One drawback to the MERP is you must have a corporation  in order to use it. Sole proprietorships, S-corporations, partnerships and LLCs are not eligible because they are considered self employed.

What is a small business tax write off?

Can you tell me in simple terms what a small business tax write off is?  I think I know but it sounds to good to be true.

SBTI Solution: I agree…it is too good to be true. A small business tax write off is all the money you spend to do business.  This amount is subtracted from your income and you pay tax on what’s left. This includes everything from rent  and mileage to supplies, equipment and employee benefits and retirement plans. You can set up perks for yourself and your employees and write them off on your taxes!! It’s the best thing since sliced bread!
